GPT-6 Astra: where it fits
What Astra adds over GPT-5.6, who should use it, and how its API cost compares with a balanced model.
What changed
GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI’s current model for its most demanding work, following the GPT-5.6 family. OpenAI describes improvements for reasoning, software engineering, browsing, computer use, science, and professional work. Its published specification lists a 1.05 million token context window and up to 128,000 output tokens. OpenAI also says Astra can complete some tasks with substantially fewer output tokens than earlier models; the result depends on the task.
The standard API rate is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, higher than GPT-6.1 Sol’s $2 and $10. A larger context does not make the model a better fit by itself: compare final answers, corrections, and full task cost on your own work.
Who should switch
Try Astra for difficult, open-ended coding, research, or multi-step computer workflows where a less expensive model misses important steps. OpenAI supports built-in tools in the Responses API and lists function calling, web search, file search, code interpreter, and computer use for Astra.
Who should stay put
Keep GPT-6.1 Sol for routine work and clear coding tasks that meet your checks. At the same token volume, Sol’s current standard rates are one fifth of Astra’s. If a task does not need Astra’s added capability, paying the higher rate is hard to justify.
Cost for a typical API month
For 2 million input tokens and 500,000 output tokens, Astra costs about $45 before tools or long-context multipliers: $20 input plus $25 output. The same volume on GPT-6.1 Sol is about $9. ChatGPT Plus costs $20/month and includes Astra in Work and Codex, but not GPT-6 Pro in Chat; API calls are separate from the subscription. Check your account’s current model access and usage limit before planning around it.
Place in a suite
Keep Astra for hard problems where its result quality changes the outcome. Use Sol as a balanced daily option and GPT-6 Luna for focused high-volume work after checking representative cases.
